The Formula 1 race director, Michael Masi, explained the decision of the stewards in the maneuvers carried out by Fernando Alonso during the United States Grand Prix.

Fernando Alonso left Austin without points after being involved in three controversial actions that were widely commented and even criticized by the Alpine driver himself in the media.

And it is that Fernando Alonso considers that the decisions of the FIA are inconsistent, since three similar actions were judged differently. "I can understand his frustration. I haven't heard his frustration, but I can understand it," said Michael Masi after the race. "The decision regarding him and Kimi at Turn 1 was certainly marginal. And we will have a discussion with the drivers about it. I think there were two parts to the story, obviously forcing a driver off the track and then overtaking."

The irony of the situation

That delicate line that allowed Räikkönen to keep the position, made Alonso and Giovinazzi later return it in two subsequent overtaking between them.

"It was a bit ironic what happened, anyone can see the irony of that situation," acknowledged Michael Masi in this regard. "I didn't listen to Fernando's radio at all. I suggested to the team that they return the position, which happened. And then obviously the same thing happened a couple of laps later with Antonio and Fernando. And the instruction was for Alfa Romeo." During the broadcast, Alpine's frustration could be heard in the form of a tense conversation between Masi and Alan Permane, sports director of the Anglo-French team. However, the race director denied that there are problems between them.

"No, I have a good relationship with all the sports directors. They all fight for their own thing and that is what you would expect. It has always happened and it is part of this. I can tell you that there are many more radio conversations than are broadcast," he said.
