Fernando Alonso has affirmed that he has little regrets for having left Formula 1 for two seasons. And if there is any, in any case, it is not having done it before and having 'saved' some years of McLaren-Honda to compete in other series.
The news of the withdrawal of Fernando Alonso from F1 in 2018 was more or less expected among his fans, since the last years of the Asturian in the McLaren-Honda project were not as expected. Echoes from other world-renowned categories drew more attention from Alonso who had already achieved F1's greatest glory twice.
"I have no regrets. No regrets. None. Maybe only to have retired too late. I should have left F1 earlier. Now it is easy to say, but I should not have waited until 2018," Alonso said for the the French newspaper L'Equipe.
After having suffered two runners-up in his Ferrari journey, the Asturian returned to McLaren for 2015 with the promising union of Honda, something that was clearly worse than expected. McLaren was ninth out of ten teams that year, leaving Alonso and Jenson Button, his teammate, anonymous on the track.
"I should have gone in 2015 or 2016 and tried the Dakar and theWEC. I already had it in mind in 2015, but I had to mature it a bit. Maybe it was too much," added Alonso.
Outside of Formula 1, the Asturian driver has run the Indianapolis 500 twice, just like the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where he won twice, as well as the World Endurance title, the WEC. In addition, he even got to participate in the world of raids with the Dakar Rally.
