Ahora que el polvo se ha asentado en Qatar, ¿cómo reflexionas sobre sumar allí el 98º podio de tu carrera?
"Fue increíble. El equipo se merecía el resultado y lo hicimos todo tan bien como pudimos desde el viernes hasta el domingo. En carrera comenzamos muy bien y una vez asentadas las posiciones, estábamos en una pelea con el Red Bull de Sergio Pérez. Todos hicieron su papel a la perfección, desde los boxes, pasando por la estrategia y Esteban, que luchó como un león en la pista. Presionamos como locos para asegurarnos de asegurar la tercera posición. Fue una larga espera para estar nuevamente en el podio, Hungría 2014 fue la última vez, así que fue muy lindo estar allí de nuevo. Es mi primera carrera con Alpine y espero que sea algo que podamos usar para avanzar en las dos últimas carreras y el próximo año. También fue muy importante en la batalla por el quinto lugar en el Campeonato de Constructores y, aunque tenemos que estar alerta, fue un resultado muy fuerte para el equipo".
Nunca antes has corrido en Jeddah. ¿Qué esperas de correr allí?
"Será una nueva experiencia para todos. Por lo que he visto y analizado con el equipo, será un circuito muy rápido. No estoy seguro de que podamos hacer comparaciones todavía, quizás volver a preguntarme después del viernes, cuando hayamos corrido un poco. Al igual que con cualquier pista nueva, debes prepararte a fondo para el fin de semana y analizar cada detalle. Ya hemos estado en algunos circuitos nuevos este año, así que tenemos una idea de lo que debemos tener en cuenta, pero un lugar nuevo puede traer muchas sorpresas. Nunca se sabe lo que puede pasar, esperemos otro fin de semana fuerte".
¿Disfrutas corriendo de noche en la Fórmula 1?
"Sí, definitivamente tiene una sensación especial. He corrido en Le Mans y otras categorías donde es normal correr de noche. Pero hay que recordar que hubo un momento en el que no teníamos carreras nocturnas en la Fórmula 1 y perder la luz durante un domingo siempre era algo que no quería que sucediera, ya que significaba que no podía seguir compitiendo. Le dije al equipo en Qatar que podría haber conducido allí toda la noche y hasta la mañana si me hubieran dado suficiente combustible. Ahora tenemos muchas carreras nocturnas y es solo una parte de la Fórmula 1. Sería extraño no tenerlas. Te hace preguntarte qué será lo próximo en diez años más o menos que no pensamos que fuera probable en el deporte. El deporte siempre está evolucionando no solo en la pista, sino también fuera de ella, por lo que será emocionante ver cuál es la próxima innovación que llega a nuestro mundo".

Now the dust has settled on Qatar, how do you reflect on adding your 98th career podium there?
"It was incredible. The team deserved the result and we executed everything as well as we could have from Friday through to Sunday. In the race we started very well and once the positions had settled, we were in a fight with the Red Bull of Sergio Perez. Everyone did their role perfectly, from the pitstops, through to the strategy and Esteban, who fought like a lion on track. We pushed like mad to ensure third position was secured. It was a long wait for me to be on the podium again, Hungary 2014 was the last time, so it was very sweet to be up there again. It’s my first with Alpine and hopefully it’s something we can use to drive forward into the final two races and next year. It was also very important in the battle for fifth in the Constructors’ Championship and while we need to stay on our toes, it was a very strong result for the team."
You’ve never raced in Jeddah before. What are you expecting from racing there?
"It’ll be a new experience for everyone up and down the grid. From what I’ve seen and analysed with the team, it’ll be a very fast circuit. I’m not sure we can make comparisons yet, maybe ask me again after Friday when we’ve done some running. As with any new track you have to prepare for the weekend thoroughly and look into every detail. We’ve been to a few new circuits already this year so we have an idea what we need to look out for, but a new venue can throw up many surprises. You never know what can happen, let’s hope for another strong weekend."
Do you enjoy racing at night in Formula 1?
"Yes, it definitely has a special feel to it. I’ve raced in Le Mans and other categories where it’s normal to race at night. But you have to remember there was a time when we didn’t have any night races in Formula 1 and losing the light during a Sunday was always something you didn’t want to happen as it meant you couldn’t keep racing. I said to the team in Qatar that I could have driven there all night and into the morning had they given me enough fuel. We have many races at night now and it’s just a part of Formula 1. It would be strange not to have them. It makes you wonder what will be next in ten years or so that we didn’t think was probable in the sport. The sport is always evolving not just on the track but off it too, so it’ll be exciting to see what is the next innovation that comes into our world."
