Alpine lowers expectations: they want to succeed in 2024
Laurent Rossi, CEO of Alpine, has lowered expectations for next season by ensuring that it is a long-term project in Formula 1. The plan is actually to succeed again in 2024.
It is true that the French brand achieved a victory - Esteban Ocon achieved his first triumph in F1 - in the Hungarian Grand Prix, but under "normal" conditions the A521 can't fight against Mercedes, Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari.
The 2022 regulation change is a great opportunity for all teams, which prompted the return of Fernando Alonso to Formula 1. Laurent Rossi, however, prefers to be cautious and hopes to return to the top in three years.
"We have a long-term project. The goal is to reach a level of competitiveness that will put us on the podium as many times as possible in 2024. From today, in fifth place - in constructors - a roadmap can easily be found.", Rossi commented for the official Formula 1 website.
"Every year will be a little better. It is a project with 100 races, four years. In each race we must progress. It can be progress that is seen on the track or progress in which not all the small details are seen. The idea it is never stopping and seeing that we are going in the right direction. Next year will be a year to toss the coins."
"All we want is to make sure that we have a satisfactory level of performance to start with and that we are not too far from the most competitive, then from there we can continue our climb to the top," he added.
On the other hand, the executive director of the Renault Group, Luca de Meo, has endorsed the words of Laurent Rossi when stating that Alpine has "a long-term commitment" to Formula 1. The French team begins to look beyond 2022.
